High Protein Bread

 
I use this product daily.  If you want a delicious high protein bread try this. This is a super low carb, high protein, high fat loaf, it is gain-free, sugar-free and has dairy-free options. Delicious served toasted with eggs or avocado (or both) or just use as a sandwich base and fill with your favourite ingredients.

Prep time:
15mins
Cook time: 50mins
Yield: approx 20 slices

Ingredients:

  • 3 scoops Coconut 180Superfood
  • 1 cup ground linseed
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 2 Tbs chia seeds
  • 2 Tbs sesame seeds
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 60g melted butter or coconut oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup natural yoghurt or coconut cream
  • 1 Tbs apple cider vinegar

Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 180c and line a loaf tin with baking paper.
  2. Place pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds in a food processor and process until ground but still with some chunky bits.
  3. In a large bowl mix together 180, ground linseed, chia seeds, sesame seeds, salt, baking powder, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
  4. In a separate bowl whisk together wet ingredients until well combined.
  5. Pour wet ingredients into dry and mix gently to combine – will make a thick batter (not a bread dough), if it seems too dry add some extra yoghurt or coconut cream.
  6. Transfer to loaf tin and bake for approx 50mins until firm.

Athletes will try anything to get an edge on the competition.
And in a flash. Their interest in any recovery device can spark a trend for the masses. Because we all know that if we used the same recovery devices. Then we would all be superstars in our own minds. Luckily for us. These recovery devices get more and more accessible every day. Check out 5 of the more interesting options creeping up from behind the scenes.
 

 1 - Cryotherapy or Cryogenic Chamber Therapy - Found at selected spas, gyms and health centers across the USA. Check your area for a trial session that typically costs between $50-100. Frigid air blast your whole body during treatment inside a liquid nitrogen gas chamber. Inside the chamber the air temperature plunges to between -180°F to -250°F. This results in a drop of a person's skin surface temperature to 30-50°F. Your treatment last for roughly 2-3 minutes. And this helps the body promote healing and release endorphins after exercise.
The Dallas Mavericks believed it gave them a key edge during their 2011 championship run. And many athletes swear that the endorphins it promotes after a tough workout help them bounce back the next day. If you got the time, money and a location near you. Then Google will provide you with some options.
2 - Sequential air compression devices - Both legs rest inside giant boots. Divided into multiple chambers from the foot to the upper thigh. 3 - Altitude chambers - Ideal for endurance athletes. And used to help increase your red blood cell count which boost your blood's oxygen carrying capacity. An altitude chamber replicates living in high altitude elevations. Higher elevations cause you to breathe less oxygen compared to sea level. And your body responds to the shortage of oxygen available in high altitude environments. By enhancing its ability to carry oxygen throughout your body. In the end, your body benefits with a slight endurance boost when you train at lower elevations.
Live high, train low. Hypoxico and AltiPower, two of the established brands for altitude chambers. Their units work by adding more nitrogen to the air. Which results in a lower percentage of oxygen consumed per breath. Their units get pricey to buy, but you can rent one for roughly $175 per week. Unfortunately, the rental comes with a four week minimum. And up to 8 payments can go towards the overall cost of purchase.
You want to use their units when you sleep, and also for any daily leisure activities. They also make a portable mask unit that you can use with stationary bikes, treadmills and other stationary activities.
If you plan on using an altitude training system. Then you may also want to purchase a pulse oximeter for safety reasons. This will allow you to monitor and measure your blood oxygen saturation percentage (SaO2%) and heart rate. If you purchase a pulse oximeter from Amazon Marketplace, make sure you get an adult sized one. Or it might not fit upon arrival.
And do beware of the elevation training masks available on Amazon Marketplace and other places. Armed with a misleading name. These mask only restrict the amount of air you inhale. So you breathe less air, but you still end up breathing in your normal amount of oxygen per breath. Therefore, they will not help increase your red blood cell count or lower your blood oxygen saturation percentage (SaO2%) when using them.
What do these elevation training masks do?
These elevation training mask help you to train and strengthen your diaphragm muscles. By forcing you to draw deeper breaths. When you constantly take in deeper breaths during your workouts. EMS devices can help you recover from your workouts or from injury. Luckily, active recovery from your workout only requires a low-voltage EMS device. You will find that using EMS in a pulsing mode for 10-20 minutes after your workout. Will stimulate circulation when used at a very low intensity. Thus cheaper devices meet the electric currency requirements of active recovery. And you can find lots of options that fall into the $90-$215 price range when searching for EMS or TENS devices on-line.
However, if you want a quality device that can do it all. You'll need an EMS device with enough juice to maximize fast twitch muscle fiber recruitment, increase muscle strength, increase muscle mass, aid recovery and prevent muscle atrophy. Then you will need to pony up the cash for a high grade EMS unit. Which will fall in the $500-$900 range. Compex and Globus, two of the top end brands in the EMS market.
If you plan to own a top end EMS device. Then you will want to work the EMS device into your routine after your workouts or on off days as a strength training supplement. Just make sure to crank the unit up to high voltage after your initial warm up to receive the full benefits of the EMS device.
5 - Compression garments - A bit of a cop out, but surprisingly scientifically sound for recovery. What started as Allen Iverson's shooting sleeve morphed into 1,195 product results on Amazon Marketplace. Typically worn during workouts because they feel good and after workouts to enhance recovery. If you want to wear them during your athletic activities, then look for a compression level between 15-20 mmHG.
Graduated compression garments provide maximum pressure at the wrist or ankle area. The pressure lessens as you move up the arm or leg. With the goal of pushing the blood furthest from the heart towards it. Wear your graduated and medical grade compression garments for 2-3 hours after your training session to help recover.
And this doesn't even cover other athletic recovery tools. Such as palm cooling devices to recover on your rest intervals, and allow for increased arm muscle activity and strength. Cooling vest to recover against the heat, and enhance your overall endurance in hot environments. Zero gravity treadmills to help with injury recovery; check Google for options in your area. And lastly, hyperoxic recovery during workouts, on rest intervals or post-workout via the use of an oxygen mask or oxygen cans to supply yourself with a dosage of pure oxygen.

CrossFit and the Paleo Diet Provide the Ideal Fitness Combination

CrossFit and the Paleo Diet complement one another. CrossFit is an intense type of fitness training that is designed to improve your overall fitness. The Paleo Diet is focused on quality, non-processed food to ensure you're as healthy as you can be. As such, the pairing of this training and food lifestyle is the ideal fitness combination.
CrossFit and the Paleo Diet
CrossFit originally promoted the Zone Diet which is based on precise measurements of carbs, proteins and fats. However this diet is very difficult to adhere to because of the need for specific measurements.
In contrast, the Paleo Diet does not require you to measure your food intake, and is focused on the consumption of quality food. Also known as the Caveman Diet, it eliminates the frustration that comes with trying to measure out food portions.
The Rules of the Paleo Diet
In simple terms, the approach is:

  • Do not eat processed food

  • Consume only quality food

  • There's no limit on the amount of food that can be eaten
The approach is based on the philosophy of only eating foods that people ate in the Paleolithic era. That means there are no processed foods which eliminates all fast foods, sweets and anything unnatural from your diet.
However there are a number of benefits to this diet. For example, there is no limit to the amount of seafood or lean meats that you can consume. The same €no limit€ rule also applies to fruits and vegetables.
The focus is on eating quality, natural foods which means that processed foods, cereals and grains, dairy products and legumes are not part of this diet.
The belief is that humans survived the Paleolithic era eating foods that were not processed and it contributed to the long-term survival and evolution of humans. This type of eating has several aspects that must be followed for it to provide the health (and weight loss) benefits that are attributed to those who follow it.
The Seven Key Components of the Paleo Diet

  1. You can eat large portions of animal meat (protein) without hesitation, as long as it's unprocessed.
  2. Obtain your carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables, and not the alternative sources such as pasta.
  3. Acquire necessary fiber from non-starchy fruits and vegetables. Again, there is no limit to the amount that can be eaten.
  4. Include some mono-saturated fats such as avocados, Brazilian nuts and canola oil, as well as polyunsaturated fats such as salmon and oil, and equal amounts of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats.
  5. Eat foods that have low sodium, and elevated potassium levels. Salt is not something that is part of this diet but foods such as bananas provide a great snack for CrossFit participants.
  6. You should have an alkaline loaded diet which means that approximately one-third of your diet should be vegetables.
  7. Consume foods with elevated levels of plant phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Foods such as broccoli and lettuce are essential components to meeting the food requirements of the Paleo Diet.


    These seven rules will put you in a position to achieve superior health, reduce the risk of lifelong illness and lose a large amount of weight.

    The Real Impact of Carbs

    Carbohydrates have earned somewhat of a bad reputation over the years. Like other macronutrients before them, carbs have fallen victim to the latest diet trends and fads, many of which recommend significantly reducing carbohydrate intake across the board. In fact, the topic often inspires heated debate between health and fitness experts, not to mention the feelings of love, hate and guilt inspired in the average person. Carbs have become the guilty pleasure of macronutrients. 
    For those with weight loss as a goal, low-carb diets have seemed to provide the answer. Reduced carbohydrate diets are commonly recommended based on the initial weight loss; however, studies have found this initial weight loss is often not sustained and, in many cases, leads to weight gain down the road. Plus, without carbs to utilize for energy, the body begins to burn protein. Over the long-term, a balanced diet including carbohydrates will yield the best results. 
    It’s time to set the record straight about this essential macronutrient and find out the real impact of carbs on our bodies. 
    The Role of Carbs
    Carbohydrates are a key source of energy. As the body ingests these macronutrients from food, it sets in motion a complex process of carbohydrate breakdown, insulin release and sugar absorption.     The Dark Side of Carbs
    Yes, carbs are a primary source of energy and a must for a quality nutrition program. And yes, carbs can have a dark side just like any other macronutrient consumed in excess. This is where carbs start earning a bad reputation and it’s all in how we eat them. Carbohydrates are a source of energy, broken down by the body and then used or stored as glycogen, which is a quick source of energy to power your muscles through their next lifting session or high-intensity interval training workout. Unfortunately, the body’s ability to store glycogen is limited. Once the glycogen reserves are full, where does the excess glucose go? That extra energy broken down from excess carbohydrates is stored as fat instead of glycogen. Not all carbs lead to fat, just the excess ones. 
    It’s time to recognize the real impact of carbs—the energy they provide for day-to-day needs or extreme workout—as well as how we utilize them, for better or worse. Making a place for quality carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes in a good nutrition program can ensure long-term success

    6 Things Every Beginner Should Know Before Trail Running

    From the moment my old worn down Asics hit the dirt trail for the first time, I knew right then and there that my running would never be the same.

    As someone who had been running and training on roads for a good while before discovering the trails, it took some real adjustment before I could feel comfortable on this new terrain.

    I have written extensively about how trail running can make any runner a stronger runner, and how important the change of pace can be for both the body and the mind, but it isn’t very often I talk about how that transition from road to dirt isn’t always easy. I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my transition, and I’m still learning how to be a stronger runner every time I go out, but I believe a few key lessons can help the beginning trail runner get the hang of the new sport much faster. Below I’ll dive into what I believe are the 6 things everyone should know before hitting the trail.
     
    1) Slow down

    If you have read just about any post I’ve written on trail running, slowing down is often the first things I mention. Your times and pace on the road should never be compared to your time and pace on the trail.
    Trail running means running with a different focus and a different form. You can’t expect to run as fast on a rocky, rooty trail as you can on a nice smooth road. When going out on the trail, adjust your speed to what feels comfortable and appropriate for your trail workout. Even if you aren’t going as fast, you are still using the same (if not more) amount of energy. Trying to keep that same pace will either cause an injury or cause you to burn out quickly.

    2) Hills on trails are often more frequent and steeper

    Road hills can be treacherous, but let’s face it, they aren’t ever that steep. And for good reason. Trails are a different story. They can be as steep as the blazer wants them to be. They can go straight up, straight down, around a tree, or around a mountain. Trails can change moment to moment, or climb steady for miles.
    Trails are their own beast and runners should be prepared.
     
    3) Lift those feet

    This might seem like a no-brainer, but the trail is a different terrain than the pavement. Someone once told me that Americans are some of the clumsiest people in the world because we are so used to smooth sidewalks and roads. Just watch people as they are going over a bumpy sidewalk, they will start tripping all over the place. When it comes to trials we have the same problem. We are often so used to running on smooth roads that the bumpy singletrack can be incredibly difficult to stay upright on. Teach yourself how to lift your feet and prepare for the different terrain. I learned this lesson the hard way, having fallen dozens of times on the trails of Rock Creek Park. Bruises, cuts, wounds and twisted ankles have all come from me not lifting my feet properly. The more time I spend on the trail, the less I find myself falling. It is only when I stop paying attention and quit lifting my feet that I find myself eating dirt.

    4) Don’t be afraid to hike I know, walking when you should be running? Not cool.
    Turns out that isn’t really the case with trail running. Because the trails are often much steeper, it can at times be more efficient to walk than run up a section of trail. I remember watching people do this during my first trail race and thinking all the other runners were out of shape. When I burnt out well before the finish and they flew past me, it clicked that I had been mistaken. Throw your hands on your knees, and powerhike up the hill. No one will judge, I promise.

    5) You might need new gear     
    I know, running should be simple, right? Especially trail running.
    But sometimes you just need to take appropriate precautions. The nature of running through the woods instead of on the road means that sometimes you are left with fewer resources. Bringing water and food along with you on long trail runs is usually a good idea.



    If trail running becomes a staple in your routine, you might want to consider trail shoes.  Trail shoes are often made from tougher aterials than road shoes, and are built to withstand the extra wear and tear.  Sometimes they are made with a rock plate in the sole to help protect the feet against bruising, and often they have a different type of sole, designed to maintain grip on the rocks and dirt better than a traditional road shoe. Road shoes can be used on the trail, trail shoes can be used on the road, but if you are running mostly on one rather than the other, it is worth considering when purchasing your next pair.

    6) Tell Someone Where You Are

    Trail running is oftentimes more secluded and dangerous than its road counterpart. The last thing you want to do is get lost or fall and break something with no one around. Tell your husband, wife, or roommate where you are going and when you plan to return. If you are out in the middle of nowhere and plan to be gone for a long time, it never hurts to leave a note in the dashboard of your car stating which trail you are headed out on and roughly when you plan to get back.

    Chances are nothing will happen, but it is much better to be safe than sorry.

    Trail running has set my running free, and I hope that it can do the same for you. With these 6 simple tips, I hope that your learning curve is a little smaller than mine. Now be safe and see you in the woods.

    Healthy Hydration | The importance of Hydration

     Water Basics

    Water is one of the most essential components of the human body. Water regulates the body’s temperature, cushions and protects vital organs, and aids the digestive system. Water not only composes 75 percent of all muscle tissue and about 10 percent of fatty tissue, it also acts within each cell to transport nutrients and dispel waste. And, because water composes more than half of the human body, it is impossible to sustain life for more than a week without it.

    Water Loss

    Necessary to the healthy function of all internal organs, water must be consumed to replace the amount lost each day during basic activities. In 2004 the Food and Nutrition Board released new dietary reference intakes for water. It is recommended that women consume 2.7 liters (91 oz) daily and men consume 3.7 liters (125 oz) through various beverages (80%) or in food (20%). Active individuals need even more, particularly if they’re exercising in hot weather. This is especially important during the 24 hours prior to vigorous exercise. You can meet your body’s water needs over the course of a day through a variety of fluids and foods including juices, soda, smoothies, tea, lemonade, soups, fruits and vegetables.

    In one hour of exercise the body can lose more than a quart of water, depending on exercise intensity and air temperature. If there is not enough water for the body to cool itself through perspiration, the body enters a state of dehydration.

    Dehydration

    For regular exercisers maintaining a constant supply of water in the body is essential to performance. Dehydration leads to muscle fatigue and loss of coordination. Even small amounts of water loss may hinder athletic performance.

    In a dehydrated state the body is unable to cool itself efficiently, leading to heat exhaustion and possibly heat stroke. Without an adequate supply of water the body will lack energy and muscles may develop cramps.

    To prevent dehydration, exercisers must drink before, during and after the workout.

    Fluid Balance and Replenishment

    It is important to drink even before signs of thirst appear. Thirst is a signal that your body is already on the way to dehydration. It is important to drink more than thirst demands and to continue to drink throughout the day. One way to check your hydration level is to monitor your urine. It should be plentiful and pale yellow unless you are taking supplements, which will darken the color for several hours after consumption.

    During exercise, water is the best fluid replenisher for most individuals, although sports drinks help replace lost electrolytes during highintensity exercise exceeding 45 to 60 minutes. Individuals who sweat profusely during exercise and whose sweat contains a high amount of sodium (you may notice salt stains/rings on your athletic wear) should choose sports drinks and ensure that their diet contains adequate sodium to prevent hyponatremia (water intoxication). Contrary to popular belief, scientific evidence suggests that moderate caffeine intake does NOT compromise exercise performance or hydration status. However, alcohol consumption can interfere with muscle recovery from exercise and negatively affect a variety of performance variables.

    It is easy to prevent dehydration with a variety of refreshing beverages, so drink up!

    Hydration Hints

    • Drink 17-20 ounces of water two to three hours before the start of exercise.
    • Drink 8 ounces of fluid 20 to 30 minutes prior to exercise or during warm-up.
    • Drink 7-10 ounces of fluid every 10 to 20 minutes during exercise.
    • Drink an additional 8 ounces of fluid within 30 minutes after exercising.
    • Drink 16-24 ounces of fluid for every pound of body weight lost after exercise.

      Hint: Rehydration occurs faster in the presence of sodium, regardless of whether this is provided in a sports drink.
