Rope Climbs: Benefits, Technique, and Performance
Rope climbing has been an immense physical strength test for decades.
To this day it has been used as a strength test in the military as well
as in gymnastics to build strength. This week in gymnastics class we
will be focusing on rope climbs. Rope climbs are a total body workout.
It is an effective exercise for the arms, upper back, core, grip
strength, and legs. Beyond muscular strength, rope climbing increases
the cardiovascular system and builds muscular endurance. The rope may be
intimidating to you, but all it takes is a little
self-confidence. There are two types of ways to climb the rope that we
will learn. One, which is called the S wrap or Spanish wrap (safer lock
method). The other is the Russian Wrap (faster method, widely used in
competition. Keep in mind that when we think about climbing the rope,
as Carl Paoli says; think about doing knees to elbows and then standing
up. Now, once we are able to perform a climb, great, but let’s talk
about how we can make these better.
2. Fingertip pushups: This movement requires the hands, back, chest, and forearms to work together improving grip strength.
3. Time yourself climbing the rope: This will help increase power and dynamic strength for longer and more climbs.
If you have never tried to climb the rope, now is the time to learn! Let’s increase that pulling strength and get you up there!

To improve your rope climb, think about 3 things:
1. Shoulder strength- This is super vital for that body weight climb. Performing lifts such as overhead press, snatch, clean and jerk, and strict pull ups will help build the strength to climb the rope at speed.2.

Seven Habits of Highly Successful Athletes
They say a habit takes 21 days to form.
That’s three weeks of constant, recurrent, focused activity – or
inactivity. The differences between good and bad habits lie in the
details, but they both exist as an end to the same means: repetition.
“We are what we repeatedly do,”
Aristotle said, once upon a time. Essentially, we are our habits. For
athletes, those habits determine their game, their success, their
production, their relevance. Elite athletes carefully develop the habits
that define them well past the 21-day qualifying point.
Most of us aren’t built to be elite
athletes, at least not genetically, but our choices are within our
control, and can elevate our game at any level. Choosing to adopt these
seven habits of successful athletes is a sure-fire way to find success
for yourself. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
THE LIST:
1. They set attainable goals and track them
Successful athletes have those goals,
but they also create their own moments of victory in parallel to their
pursuit of the endgame. While they’re training for that championship,
they’re simultaneously working toward attainable goals to check off
their list. While they’re training for that marathon, they’re also
working toward that six-minute mile. While they’re pursuing that Gold
medal, they’re also locking down tournament MVPs.
Achieving a goal, no matter the size of the prize, is a powerful incentive. It’s a reminder that following through pays off.
2. They discipline and reward themselves
It’s a simple concept, just a matter of application.
Motivation is all about incentive.
What’s the payoff? What’s the punishment? Successful athletes make it a
point to take themselves seriously, and that means calling themselves
out and holding themselves accountable.
Didn’t get out of bed this morning for
that run? Skipped breakfast? That’s ok, but yeah, you’re grounded. Ran
an extra mile at the end of practice today? Grounding revoked.
3. They sleep
An even simpler concept. Successful
athletes make sure to clock at least seven hours of sleep every night to
aid in rest and recovery. For optimal performance, sleep is crucial in
maintaining energy and endurance.
4. They feed their competitive nature
Average
isn’t okay for elite athletes. The successful ones go out there and
compete every time, no matter who they’re with, what they’re doing or
where they are. Competition is fuel to athletic fire, and the best in
the game are out there burning it up every day.
Successful athletes are constantly
pushing to be better than the guy next to them, better than they were
yesterday, better than the standard. Pushing forward with intensity and a
competitive drive keeps you on your toes and dynamic as an athlete.
Too many people mistake competition for
comparison. Successful athletes know the difference. One will make you,
one will break you.
5. They take instruction and criticism constructively
Successful athletes can take advice and
apply it usefully to their game. Coaching is crucial in sports, but
absorbing the information they provide is even more important.
The best athletes are willing to make adjustments and set their pride aside to better themselves and their teammates.
6. They let things go
They follow the 24-hour rule. 24 hours after a failure, the misstep has long since moved into nonexistence. Bye-bye blunder.
Holding onto negativity can be
detrimental to athletes. Mentally, it’s crippling. It gives pitchers the
yips, it turns a basketball into a brick, it makes a wide receiver’s
fingers all buttery.
The successful ones take 24 hours to
reflect on what went wrong and then they let go of that heavy weight and
move on without flinching.
7. They aren’t afraid to fail
The
most distinctive habit of a successful athlete is their ability to
stare a challenge in the eye and attack it without hesitation. The fear
of failure builds the walls of that box you’re supposed to be thinking
outside of and seals you up inside. When you’re scared of failing, the
best option is to avoid trying at all – right?
Chicken.
Fearing failure is a mental state
successful athletes don’t acknowledge. Everyone will fail at one point
or another – it’s inevitable. The best athletes are fully aware of this,
but attach no value to it. They fall and they get up. The ends outweigh
the means. Success outweighs failure.
Plus, chicks dig scars.

The Real Benefits of Strengthening Your Core…Beliefs
Your core muscles form the sturdy link in a chain that connects your
upper body and your lower body. Regardless of what you do while you’re
lifting, twisting or bending – from putting on your gym shoes and socks
to taking out the trash – your core is at work.
Low back pain? Check your core. Problems playing your favorite sport? Check your core.
Trouble doing household chores? Check your core. Issues with your posture? Check your core.
A little shaky on your balance and stability? Check your core. Not thinking clearly or acting wisely? Check your core.
Wait a moment? What does your core have to do with thinking clearly or acting wisely? Plenty - if it's your core BELIEFS that you're talking about.
Typically clients know the drill for core exercises,
but I'm going to show you additional exercises you may incorporate to
add an additional real benefit to your coaching sessions. Have your
clients ask themselves (and perhaps ask yourself) this simple question: "What idea have I feverishly and insistently held onto that causes many of the problems in my life?"
Here's a list adapted from the work of Albert Ellis, Ph.D., founder of Rational Emotive Behavior therapy.
Known as the forerunner of cognitive behavior therapy, Ellis has
compiled a list of the most common irrational thinking that leads to the
most universal forms of human upset:
- The idea that it is a dire necessity for adults to be loved by significant others for nearly everything they do instead of their concentrating on their own self-respect, and on loving rather than on being loved.
- The idea that certain acts are awful or wicked, and that people who perform such acts should be severely damned instead of the idea that certain acts are self-defeating or anti-social and that people's poor behaviors do not make them bad individuals.
- The idea that it's horrible when things are not the way we like them to be instead of the idea that it's unfortunate and if it's not possible to change the situation, we should temporarily accept their existence.
- The idea that human misery is invariably externally caused and is forced on us by outside people and events instead of the idea that our upset is caused by the view we take of unfortunate conditions.
- The idea that if something is or may be dangerous or fearsome we should be terribly upset instead of the idea that we should face it and accept the inevitable.
- The idea that it is easier to avoid than to face life's difficulties and self-responsibilities instead of the idea that the so-called "easy way" is usually much harder in the long run.
- The idea that we absolutely need something other, stronger or greater than yourself to rely on instead of the idea that it's better to take the risks of thinking and acting independently.
- The idea that we should be thoroughly competent, intelligent and achieving in all possible respects instead of the idea that we should accept ourselves as imperfect creatures with general human limitations and specific fallibilities.
- The idea that because something once strongly affected our life it should indefinitely affect it instead of the idea that we can learn from our past experiences.
- The idea that we must have certain and perfect control over things instead of the idea that the world is full of probability and chance, and despite this we can still enjoy life.
Help strengthen your own and your client"s core beliefs by answering the following questions in writing:
"What idea have you feverishly and insistently held onto that is the cause of many problems in your life?"
Ask yourself what's inaccurate about this unhelpful thought. Do you have any evidence the useless thought is true? If not, why keep holding onto what's unnecessary? What can you replace this adverse thought with one that's more helpful?
Do this exercise mindfully everyday, one set, as many reps as needed.

How and why you should train with TRX
TRX - WHAT IS IT?
Well, it is amazing! There’s not one thing I don’t love about TRX for myself and for my clients. Maybe you have seen that “ropey, strappy thingy” at the gym or maybe you just want to know more, or perhaps you’re hearing about TRX for the first time. No matter what, I want to cover the basics for you in hopes that you try it out and learn what all the hype is really about.
Being a TRX Certified Instructor, I use TRX in my own training routine as well as with my clients. I use TRX Training at my gym and also have one in my home for an anytime workout. I love how you can pack it up and take it to the park, do a workout in your own home, or bring it along with you when traveling. No excuses, right? No matter your fitness level, the TRX is perfect and versatile for everyone; athletes, rehab, stay at home moms, body builders, young and old. TRX offers a cardio workout, a resistance workout, muscle flexibility workout, as well as balance. No matter what your goals are, you can benefit from the TRX. Before we discuss everything there is to know about the TRX, it’s important to first understand exactly how the body works.
HOW THE BODY WORKS:
I am a trainer who incorporates many types of functional and corrective training in my clients’ routines. You’ll see why in just a moment. It is so important to understand the fundamentals and foundation of your body. Everything you do in life starts with one part of your body. Any guesses? IT’S YOUR CORE. Your core is not just about those six pack abs you see - it is so much more than that. Your core is made up of your pelvis, back, chest muscles, and also the abdominals. It is your core that is responsible for your body stability, flexibility and balance. Makes sense, right? Also, do we always move in the same direction every day like robots? No, we surely do not! We move with twisting, bending movements and we’re going left, right, down, up, side-to-side, as well as forwards and backwards. This is called “multi-plane” movements. Once you think of your body moving “all around” these different ways, wouldn’t you agree it would be very important to train your body the same way?
Whether you’re picking up after the kids or dog, playing sports, cleaning your house or car, and of course then working out, you are using your CORE whether you know it or not. For the most part, you are moving multi-plane. This is very important for us to understand because the stronger your core is and the more familiar your body is with moving multi-plane, the less injuries you will have, not only in your lower back but in your entire body.
THE MANY ADVANTAGES OF USING THE TRX SYSTEM:

WHAT IS TRX EXACTLY?
TRX stands for Total Body Resistance Exercise. It’s a type of
training that uses your own body weight and gravity to build strength,
balance, coordination, flexibility, core and joint stability, all while
preventing injuries. Not to sound intimating, the TRX was originally
designed by a Navy Seal who needed to stay in shape within limited space
using something he could easily take on his travels. (This is why you
can pack it up and take it with you nearly anywhere you can place the
anchor point.) Consequently, he created TRX and boy, did the rest of the
world catch on.
THE MANY ADVANTAGES OF USING THE TRX SYSTEM:
For starters, you can minimize your training time by working your
whole entire body switching from one exercise to the next in just
seconds. The best part to me? As I mentioned, in every exercise you
engage your core. So, this is great news if you’ve been focusing on your
core. Now watch how much harder things become when you REALLY engage
your core. Are you up for the challenge? Just think of how developing
good core strength and stability will only enhance your performance and
way of life. Your whole body will work and feel better.
Another advantage in using your own body weight and gravity is you
are able to adjust your own personal fitness level. I love that you have
control of the intensity just by walking yourself closer or further
away from the anchoring point. That means instead of having to grab a
different set of dumbbells or add more weight to machines, you just
simply adjust your foot placement. Easy enough, right? This is also why
you can keep your heart rate up and keep moving. No wasted time
(important in my workouts!) which keeps you constantly challenging your
body through every exercise.
WHAT ARE SOME EXERCISES I CAN ADD TO MY ROUTINE TO HELP MY PERFORMANCE?
With any new workout routine (yoga, weights, spin class,) it’s
important to start off with the basics. Make sure you have mastered the
proper form and technique before you move on to advanced movements. The
basic movements (yet still challenging) include: Chest Press, Row,
Lunge, Squat, Plank, Tucks, Pike, Side Lunge, Oblique Twist and Back
Extension. Say hello to CORE work! Some of my favorite moves that are
more advanced are: atomic push-ups and single-leg squats. What I also
LOVE doing with TRX is stretching. You can get fantastic full body
stretches for your entire body in ways like no other.
TRX has been a huge part of the fitness industry and is only growing
larger, from professional athletes who need peak performance to everyday
people who just want to feel and look their best. Personally, I love
that TRX is exactly what I preach all the time--there is no tension on
the joints if alignment and form are on point. That is how all workouts
should be. It is uncomplicated to learn and a truly great way to
incorporate new resistance training to any workout routine. You can find
videos online to understand more and when you purchase one, it comes
with a fantastic workout DVD.
My hope when you see TRX for the first time is to feel more encouraged and give it a try!

What is Crossfit
“CrossFit is a strength and conditioning programme built on constantly varied, if not randomised, functional movements executed at high intensity” – Founder Greg Glassman
You haven't heard of CrossFit? Let me tell you about CrossFit.
CrossFit is a lifestyle in which you are prioritizing your health. The ability to do many different things at a high level of intensity.
I think it's the absolute best way to help you reach your fitness goals.
CrossFit is a lifestyle in which you are prioritizing your health. The ability to do many different things at a high level of intensity.
I think it's the absolute best way to help you reach your fitness goals.
For
me, it's making me happy. A fun way to get fit with a lot of people.
The last person finishing is the just as important as the first one.
It's this team atmosphere that ends up making you better as an individual. It's camaraderie, that family that you end up building and the energy that you get back from it yourself, that's CrossFit to me.
You come to a CrossFit gym everybody knows your name, everybody loves you and you're a part of something bigger than just getting a workout.
CrossFit gave me that something extra that I kinda needed in life.
It's my outlet, I love it. It's my passion. It's commitment. CrossFit is a sport now.
I like the challenge, I compete with myself, I'm healthier, I am stronger. Even though I was sore, I was, you know, getting a little discouraged, you know ... I felt accountable because my community, or I felt accountable to my class because they were looking for me there.
Finding CrossFit and then having to work really dang hard for whatever your goal is ... whether its to compete or just get a damn pull-up. I love it 'cause the workout's different everyday, I can come in and I don't know what I'm doing.
Everyone is welcoming, everyone is cheering you on. They don't let you quit even if you wanna quit.
We all share this experience, which is emotional. It doesn't look emotional, it looks like people working out ... but it's emotional. I mean it's raw, it's intense, it's incredible, it's freakin' awesome. I'm gonna keep doing it for a long time, I hope.
CrossFit, to me, is a fitness program where the reward for doing well is the ability to express your fitness in everyday life in as many different planes or as many different activities that you can possibly imagine.
People walk through the door and say, 'Hey, where's all the machines?' We're the machines!

Why Doctors Recommend Isagenix
Paul: My name is Dr. Paul Anderson. I am a Canadian medical doctor and a nutritional formulator of the IsaDelights Chocolates. One of my favorite products is the IsaLean Shakes. These are delicious, low calorie and nutritionally complete meals, full of the vitamins, minerals, amino acids that you need. It supports nutritional cleansing. One of the things that make the IsaLean Shakes different than a lot of other meal replacement shakes is the form of whey they’re using. They use the highest grade of whey. It’s from happy New Zealand cows. They exceed the USDA organic regulations. The cows are pasture-fed, they don’t get hormones or antibiotics. Now they’re using a new proprietary technology that’s making the whey protein even better than before, and there’s less lactose so it’s easier on digestion. They add enzymes that make it easier to digest, but also it’s better for the body and absorption.
Nicole: My name is Dr. Nicole Kafka. I am a colorectal surgeon in New York City. One of the wonderful things about Cleanse for Life and the cleansing program is that it does not zap your energy. On a cleanse day, most people, including me, feel more energy at the end of the day than they had when they started. Even doing two days in a row can improve that feeling further, and you’re not hungry when you finish. In fact, your appetite may even be decreased for several days afterwards.
Carlos: Hello everybody. I’m Dr. Carlos Perez Cortes. This is a very extraordinary product that balances the body. It’s a nutritional enriched rejuvenated drink that restores and protects the body from stress and helps increase your ability to perform mentally and physically. It enhances the cognitive capacity. It contains over 100 specially-stored active ingredients in a [inaudible 00:02:23] from around the world and no other product, believe me, competes with this exclusive combination of quality ingredients that are tested for maximum potency and purity. It also contains [adapting] that energize cells, adapting your body to any form of stress. It also contains our advanced super-charged blend of trasiantic minerals which support the body vital functions. Over 200 powerful nutrients help rejuvenate the body. A focus on the brewing [causes] enhances the benefits of antioxidants and at the beginning had to support mental and physical performance.
Cheryl: My name is Dr. Cheryl Hart. I have been a gynaecologist for 30 years. On every cleanse day, you’ll want to include low-calories snacks. This is a perfect balance of proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats to help fulfil your body’s nutritional needs. They contain quality proteins that help reduce your cravings. They come in two delicious flavors, natural chocolate and French vanilla.
Mark: IsaPro is the essential part of Isagenix product line. This is a superb supplement for people who have a high-demand lifestyle, whether it be a professional athlete, an amateur athlete or a busy high stressed individual, and even for people that just want to ensure that they have the best protein available for their body. The building blocks of our muscles and our muscle system are amino acids and the proteins that go along with them. So what happens is, IsaPro allows the body to build lean muscle mass. It contains the highest quality whey protein concentrate available. It uses a new and proprietary processing technology for the whey protein that’s contained within it. It actually has a higher amino acid profile and lower lactose levels. It gets down to something as detailed as even the way that the cattle are processed. It’s been shown that because of the rest that the actual amino acid content and the protein available elevates in cows that are rested. Most commercial cattle never have that.
So what happens is, they use a New Zealand dairy group, whose standards actually exceed USDA organic regulations. The cows are pasture fed and not treated with hormones or antibiotics. Many cattle are fed grain, and grain contain chemicals, and things that can be absorbed by the cow, and it can become harmful when consumed. So the whey that is contained in this product, is sourced through New Zealand because it is the highest quality that exists. It contains ionic Alphalfa and it contains an advanced super charged blend of chase minerals that supports the body vital functions. It helps with stubborn weight loss plateaus, it curbs hunger and just one scoop of IsaPro contains 18 grams of nutritious lean building whey protein. It’s also ideal for athletes who really want to increase and build their lean body mass, and they can do it in a way that’s hormone and antibiotic free. I truly believe if every athlete on the planet knew the superior quality of this whey protein, they would all be on it.
Nicole: The oatmeal berry slim cakes are wonderful, wonderful healthy snack. They are good for your heart, your gut, and everything in between. They are low in calories. They are nutritionally packed. They contain five grams of fiber, which is one-fifth to one-sixth of the total fiber that we need in our diets today, which is something that almost none of us achieve otherwise. That fiber comes from whole grain oats, oat bran, amulet and flaxseed, wonderful sources which is also sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to be good for your heart and your bowel function. They contain blueberries and cranberries. They are sweetened with natural agave which has a low natural glycemic index, what that means is that they keep your blood level and your insulin levels steady. This is great for your metabolism. It’s great for your weight. It makes you feel better. You don’t get those sudden spikes of energy and then just falls of energy that comes with sugar. They’re cholesterol and preservative free. There are no transfats and they are a delicious, delicious snack. It tastes great.
Cheryl: Essentials for Women, this product is a powerful multi-vitamin formula that activates and supports advanced health for women, especially during aging. Premium vitamins, minerals, and fido nutrients create the foundation for the optimal health. Bone nourishing minerals for lasting bone strength also contains specialized herbs that reduce discomfort from monthly cycles and life transitions, often eliminating the need for hormones. This product also contains minerals for stronger hair and nails.
Mark: The other wonderful product that exists for men is Essentials for Men. This is an especially designed blend of premium nutrients that sustain and support the best possible health for men. Comprehensive B vitamins support stamina, energy, endurance, and mental concentration. Adaptogens included in the product support all-around health, endurance, and reduced symptoms of stress. Saw palmetto is also a key ingredient because it also promotes a healthy prostate.
Nicole: Natural Accelerator naturally enhances the body’s fat burning ability, but it does that without making you feel wired or speedy. It contains carefully selected natural thermogenic ingredients, that mean they help your body up its metabolism and burn fat. Those ingredients include cayenne, green tea, cinnamon and ginseng, and they help your body easily release unwanted pounds. This product does not contain any ephedrine or ma huana or any other stimulant that makes you feel wired and it’s completely caffeine free. These thermogenic herbs help your body to lose weight naturally and in a healthy way. It provides what are called lipotropics nutrients, which support you liver’s ability to metabolize fat quickly, and it contains a rich supply of the vitamin niacin. This helps to reduce your appetite and keep your metabolism chugging along. Finally, this contains royal jelly extract, a great source of natural B vitamins.
Announcer: I’m glad to see that Isogenix has an antioxidant formula. This antioxidant formula is very, very important because it contains a full spectrum of antioxidants that help protect from damaging free radicals. Denholm Harmon, back in the 1950s, came up with the theory of aging, which was associated with free radicals. He, at that time realized that by taking antioxidants you might be able to prolong this aging process. Isagenix provides one of the strongest antioxidants that is available on the market. It protects you from free radical damage and may reduce the risk of certain forms of cancers. Antioxidants promote wellness and protects against illness as well. It tends to reverse accelerated aging and boosts energy.
Nicole: IsaFlush is a collection of herbs and minerals which help the gut to work better. It effectively and safely encourages regularity and helps to soothe intestinal discomfort. It includes magnesium, which supports improved water absorption. It helps with improved digestion and reduces intestinal discomfort, and it supports heart and lung health. IsaFlush helps to support a balanced digestive system which improves your ability to withstand stresses, physical, emotional, and environmental, and keeps you in balance. It helps you to remain regular, which is important for the body to eliminate waste, maintain water balance, lessen fatigue, and support cardiovascular health.
Paul: One of my favorite Isagenix products is Want More Energy.
It’s a natural energy drink. It’s loaded with vitamins and nutrients that replenish the body. The thing I like about it is low calorie. It only has 35 calories, but it helps increase your mental and physical performance. One of the best ways I know to use this product is about a half hour before exercise, combine it with IsoDelight. It has tremendous good results. You can also use it on cleanse days. It really helps you get through those long cleanse days.
On non-cleanse days, to support you when you start to get some cravings, and I can see why it isn’t a knockout. One of the best apects about it is that it doesn’t contain caffeine, ma huang, epinephrine. There’s no artificial sweeteners or coloring. It’s caffeine-free. It provides a natural energy boost and it’s just a great product that I love to use personally, and I recommend it to you.
