Living a Healthy Life

We’re so busy racing through our day to day lives that we don’t take the time to look after ourselves. It’s really no wonder that so many of us are tired and run down. What are some simple things that we can do to improve our quality of life?

In the fast paced world that we live in it can be easy to neglect our health and wellness. We’re so busy racing through our day to day lives – family, friends, work, social engagements – that we don’t take the time to look after ourselves. It’s really no wonder that so many of us are tired and run down. What are some simple things that we can do to improve our quality of life?

Drink Drink Drink…

You’ve heard it a million times and you’ll probably hear it a million more – drink more water!

Think about it: The human body is 72% water. A 5% drop in fluids creates a 25-30% loss in energy. A 15% drop in fluids causes death! At this point in time 66% of us aren’t drinking enough water, so over half the population isn’t running on all six cylinders to begin with – before things like bad air, bad food and stress take their toll.

It’s not really a difficult thing to remedy. Just drink one glass of water every half hour or so – or 10-12 glasses of water per day – and you’ll notice a huge jump in your energy levels.

Living Food – Loving Life!

A little known fact is that heating food above 116°F destroys much of the nutrient content. Considering that we already aren’t eating enough veggies, that’s a fairly substantial problem. Nutritionists recommend five serves of fresh vegetables per day. How many of us are actually taking that advice?

A great way to get the nutrients found in fresh veggies without spending all day at stove or eating raw celery sticks is to juice your veggies. Make sure that you own a good juicer (some juicers expose vegetables to heat created by friction during juicing, which breaks down important enzymes), grab some fresh vegetables and drink your way to good health. It takes a fraction of the time (there’s no cooking involved, for one thing) and it’s convenient. You can take your juice to work and even give some to the littlies for school lunches!

Wheatgrass in particular is an excellent source of nutrition. It’s high in chlorophyll (sometimes described as ‘plant blood’ because it closely resembles human red blood cell molecules) and has over 100 elements that the body needs. Fresh grains are another excellent source for vitamins and minerals.

Energy In – Energy Out

Exercise is another dirty word for most of us. The thing is, exercise doesn’t have to be horribly time consuming or mind-numbingly boring. There are plenty of options.

Years ago gyms usually offered weight rooms, aerobics classes and maybe a tydro-circuit. Now you can add water aerobics, yoga, pilates, dance-ercise, step classes and a whole range of new workout options.

If you don’t really have the time or money for the gym, or prefer to spend your mornings/nights at home, then try an exercise bike or walker. I’d be lost without my exercise bike – I set it up in front of the television and peddle away merrily during my favourite shows.

If, like me, you suffer from illness or injury or your level of fitness is quite low, you might like to consider some invaluable advice that I got from my doctor:

Once you’re physically unfit, and particularly if you’re also unwell, it can be a mammoth battle to just do the most minimal amount of exercise in a day. The danger is that inactivity leads to further loss of energy, which becomes a self-perpetuating cycle until you can barely get off the couch.

An excellent way to get back into a physical routine is to start slowly. Ridiculously slowly, it may seem. For the first couple of weeks, walk/ride for 5 minutes per day – exactly 5 minutes, no more, even if you think you could continue. When the 2 weeks are up, increase to 7 minutes, then 10 minutes, 12 minutes… continue to gradually increase your activity until you’re at a level that you’re comfortable with.

It may sound a little silly, but it works. In effect, you trick your body into producing more energy. You’re building your exercise time up so slowly that your body doesn’t really realise what’s happening. Follow this method and, before you know it, you’ll be comfortably exercising within your limits every day.

So, folks, that’s the basics. If you can rearrange your life a little to allow for better eating habits and a little exercise, and if you remember to just drink a glass of water every half hour or so, you’ll be well on the way to living a healthy life. On a final note, don’t forget to take some quiet time for yourself. Meditating is an excellent way to minimise stress. You don’t have to sit around for hours, just give yourself 5 minutes of quiet time every day – even in the shower, if that’s the only place where you can get time out – and have a little catch up with yourself.

And, last but by no means least, laugh! In fact, laugh like a loon – the louder the better! You’ll be amazed at how much such a simple thing can lift your spirits!

13 Foods That Trim down Your Body the Natural Way

With 2016 nearly here, many #people will be on a huge health kick, looking for all the best foods that trim down your body. It’s easy to want a quick fix solution to trimming down, but if you want to know a secret, most of us make it way too hard. Trimming down the natural and healthy way is really quite simple, and more so than you think. To trim down the easy way, and actually not go hungry or suffer from poor nutrition, all we need to do is choose a larger amount of simple, healthy foods. All the foods below will naturally help you drop pounds the way your body prefers and was meant to do. Try just filling your plate with these foods that trim down your body each day, and in no #time you’ll slim down the natural and smart way, without going hungry or feel like you’re dieting. Better yet, pair as many of them together as possible for meals and snacks, and have fun coming up with new combinations!

 1. Fish
Fish is one superfood I will always be an advocate of and it’s one of the best foods that trim down your body quickly. Why? It’s high in amino acids that digest seamlessly in your #body, for immediate use to repair and increase your lean muscle mass. It’s also almost fat free, low in #calories and contains no carbs at all. Pair fish with some of the healthy foods #below for the most filling benefits and eat 4-5 servings a week. Regardless that some sources can be high in mercury, if you choose a good source, fish is a much better alternative than choosing meat for #weight loss.

2. Greens
Greens are my favorite trim food of all. Kale, spinach, arugula, romaine, collards, etc, they’re all amazing for you. They balance the mind, body and they’re so low in #calories, but fill you up quickly. Due to their intense nutrient profile, greens also signal immediate nourishment to your brain, which satisfies it sooner. When you eat foods with little nutrients, it’s easier to naturally be hungrier because your body isn’t getting the nutrients it wants and needs. Eating greens takes care of that because they’re high in vitamins, antioxidants and minerals that your #body literally craves. Eat a huge salad or bowl of steamed greens and see if you don’t agree with me!

3. Veggies
While you’re upping your greens, don’t forget about veggies too! My favorite veggies are celery, turnips, pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes and carrots, but any veggie is game. Do be careful with white potatoes as they can spike your blood sugar just like a refined piece of bread would. Opt for purple red or sweet potatoes instead. Also, as long as you tolerate them, don’t forget about broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, onions and cabbage either. They’re brimming with nutrition! All veggies are full of vitamins, fiber and water, which fill you up, add bulk and ensure your #body gets exactly what it needs. Cooking them makes them easier to digest than eating them raw, so don’t think they need to be raw to get all the healthy #benefits.

4. Egg Whites
Egg whites are the lowest calorie source of animal protein per ounce. For ¼ cup of egg whites, you’re only looking at 25 calories, no fat, no carbs and straight protein. Don’t fear the whole yolk as long as you keep it to one a day, but egg whites are the most figure friendly option of the two. Egg whites can be added to anything, be it a smoothie, oatmeal or cooked up with some veggies. Any way you want to use them is great. They fill you up and hold you over for a long time, with very little #calories in them. This trims you down in no time, but be sure to get a little healthy fat from other sources if you can. Eating all protein and no fat all the #time isn’t good for your metabolism long term. Short term though, #egg whites will trim you down incredibly fast.

5. Nonfat Greek Yogurt
I adore nonfat Greek yogurt. Even if I don’t eat any other animal protein source, which I try to monitor, I always eat Greek yogurt, plain and unsweetened. It is the perfect anti-stress, low sugar and high protein snack. It contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and a large amount of zinc as well. Yogurt is a food more #women need to be eating, but not the high sugar varieties most of us are used to. Choose plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt and pair it with a low sugar fruit like berries, or some stevia to sweeten it up without adding sugar. I use it in smoothies as well, as it makes for a delicious ice cream like shake that’s secretly healthy for you! The probiotics, protein, low sugar and fat-free qualities of Greek yogurt help you drop pounds quickly, despite that it comes from a dairy source.

6. Psyllium Husks
If you haven’t heard of psyllium husks, let me introduce you to your blood sugar, digestive tract and appetite’s #best friend. Psyllium husk is a straight plant fiber that acts in the body exactly like #chia seeds do, but it is calorie free. It’s high in soluble and insoluble fiber, swells in the digestive tract to fill you up and helps excrete wastes through the #body. Just be sure not to use too much! ⅛ tsp. added to two of your meals or snacks a day is just enough!

7. Hemp Protein
Hemp protein is by far my favorite single source of vegan protein. It’s rich in heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids, protein, magnesium, B vitamins, Vitamin E, manganese, copper, zinc and fiber. It’s also lower in fat per serving than hemp seeds, which are richer in fat. Hemp protein is simply the straight protein derived from raw hemp seeds and is an incredible source of easy to digest protein with all essential amino acids. It helps increase lean muscle and it’s very easy to digest, even though it has a lot of fiber per serving. I add hemp protein to smoothies, energy bars and even homemade puddings with Greek yogurt and stevia. Hemp protein also thickens up recipes nicely, so you can use it for baking as well. It will work like any other lean protein source to increase lean muscle mass and burn fat, but it’s more alkaline and friendly to your #body than animal sources like whey.

8. Oats
Oats are by far one of the best grains to consume, if not the best. They’re easy to digest for most #people, and if you’re scared of gluten contamination, just buy gluten-free like I do. Oats are a rich source of fiber and protein, they’re almost fat-free and they’re rich in heart healthy vitamins and minerals. Oats are unique to other grains, because they contain more protein per serving and they're just a couple grams under the almighty quinoa seed. I find oats easier to digest than quinoa, and enjoy their milder, nuttier texture. Oats are also one of the most filling foods you can eat to start your day. You can also add them to smoothies, use them to thicken omelets, muffins or even a healthy veggie meatloaf. Oats help burn fat in the body by increasing your fiber intake and protein intake. Since they stabilize your blood sugar, they also keep your insulin from storing fat in your #body and keep it even to prevent blood sugar surges.
9. Coconut
Coconut is one of my personal favorite foods for a few reasons. First, it helps stabilize your mood, enhance your mental focus and reduce stress. This relates to #weight loss for a few reasons. It helps to keep you from reaching for sugar as a quick source of fuel, and it also reduces your cortisol levels from high levels of stress. Next, coconut is high in fiber, which promotes a full feeling, and its healthy fats are burned by your liver to help increase fat burn in your #body. Just be sure to stick to all unsweetened forms of coconut. I highly recommend unsweetened coconut shreds to add to oatmeal, baking recipes or energy bars. You can also stir it in your yogurt for a filling snack. I like to use raw coconut butter in my smoothies, or as a butter replacement. I also like to eat it 1 tbsp. at a #time off the spoon when I’m hungry and need a quick energy source. #Coconut oil is the best oil to cook with since it holds its nutrients at high heat levels and will help increase fullness quicker in your meals.

10. Berries

Berries are just bursting with fat burning properties. Since they’re low in sugar, they won’t mess with your glycemic index at all. They’re also rich in antioxidants, fiber and vitamins and minerals which help release toxins from stored fat in the #body. Berries enhance your mood as well. Just adding ¼ cup to your smoothies, to your oatmeal or your yogurt is a great way to enjoy them, though the possibilities are endless!

11. Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds are full of fiber, just like #chia seeds, and have a host of omega 3 fatty acids to increase fat burning in the body, regulate your blood sugar and their fiber content helps increase satiety. They also contain phytoestrogens, which act like hormones in your #body, helping to relieve stress from low estrogen levels. They also help give you great #skin, as a bonus! Add ground flaxseeds, not whole, to your smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal or even cooked veggies. Their fiber helps promote regularity, which will help reduce stored toxins from your body and fight off excess water #weight.

12. Cucumbers
I adore cucumbers! They’re not just low in #calories, but filled with slimming potassium and Vitamin C. Cucumbers are also a great way to hydrate after a workout and they are a natural detoxifying fruit (yes, they’re a fruit). I freeze cubes of chopped organic cucumbers and use them in smoothies instead of bananas to lower the sugar content, increase the water content and give my smoothies a delicious, fresh taste. Try it for yourself and see how you like it!

13. Lemons
Lastly, let’s give lemons some love! Lemons are fat burning machines! They’re naturally slimming because they help move toxins out of the body and reduce stress due to their Vitamin C content. They also act as a natural diuretic to release stored water weight in your body. I like to drink lemon water when I have a headache or a stomachache and I always feel better within half an hour. They help alkalize your whole body and reduce acid contents in your blood, #stomach and your lymph fluids. Lemons also help to reduce pain and inflammation in the #body, and can even help with constipation. Brew a hot cup of water, add a few lemon slices and drink up. You won’t believe how good this is, any #time of the day. It will help trim you down naturally, without you having to go on some crazy Master Cleanse using lemons!
Obviously, there are many, many other slimming foods out there. Some of my other favorites include almonds, raw chocolate, herbs and spices and certain superfoods. I’d love to hear your favorite slimming foods if you have any. Being slim is not about starving! It’s about feeding your body with high quality ingredients that naturally keep you at a great #weight the right way. What’s your favorite slimming food?

Too tired to exercise ?

Too tired to exercise: Have your iron levels checked

If you already exercise and find you’re approaching your daily workout with excessive fatigue and lack of motivation, see your doctor and have your iron level checked. Your doctor can do a blood test called a ferreting level which measures your body’s stores of iron. Aerobic exercise can cause slow depletion of iron levels with iron being lost through sweating and through leakage of small amounts into the gut with sustained movements. Plus, it’s not uncommon for women of child bearing age to be iron deficient. If you’re iron deficient, iron supplementation may make all the difference in your energy levels and your attitude towards exercise.

Too tired to exercise: Exercise when you awaken in the morning

If you feel tired and less motivated to exercise in the evening, try setting your alarm thirty minutes early and get your exercise session out of the way before the day starts. An early morning exercise session can help to energize and motivate you for the rest of the day. Plus, you can look forward to an evening of relaxation knowing you’ve accomplished your goal. This can be a simple solution to the problem of being too tired to work out.

Too tired to exercise: Do it anyway

Sometimes the best cure for fatigue is a vigorous exercise session. Have you ever noticed how you can walk into the health club exhausted but after thirty minutes of motion you feel energized and invigorated? There’s nothing like exercise to get your blood flowing and zap fatigue. If it’s difficult for you to get motivated to make that trip to the club, promise yourself a small reward after you finish your session if you follow through. Just make sure it’s not a jelly donut!

Too tired to exercise: Lighten up your workout

On nights that you’re too tired to work out, follow a lighter, less rigorous routine. To motivate yourself to take the first step, tell yourself you’ll only exercise for ten minutes. After ten minutes have elapsed chances are you’ll feel so invigorated that you’ll want to keep going.

Too tired to exercise: Change your exercise format

If you feel fatigued with a lack of motivation towards exercise on a particular evening, change your workout entirely and substitute something fun. Instead of walking thirty minutes on the treadmill at the club, take your dog for a brisk walk or do thirty minutes of stretches while you watch your favorite T.V. show. You can get back on schedule the next time you exercise and the variety will be good for you both physically and mentally.

Give these tips a try and soon you’ll no longer need the old excuse of being too tired to work out. Plus, you’ll look and feel like a new person

7 Principles of Healthy Eating

The remedy for eating better isn’t deprivation, blandness, or a rigid diet―it’s incorporating good habits into your life. The key to eating right and maintaining weight is a plan that fits your life. Consider these points…

1. Know Yourself

Some people revel in the art of food preparation. For others, the microwave is a lifesaver. What matters is that you find a healthy way to cook and eat that works for you. If you love a large, sit-down dinner, for example, ignore conventional wisdom that says it's best to eat lots of small meals (just be sure not to snack all day if you plan to feast at night).

Do You Need to Worry About These 12 Health Symptoms?

Knowing yourself also means planning for pitfalls. If, say, you often nosh while you work, keep food as far from your desk as possible or bring in a healthy snack from home. If your downfall is salty junk food, don't eat directly from a multi-serving package; take out a handful and put the rest away.

Slight changes don't feel like sacrifice, says Brian Wansink, a professor of marketing and nutritional science at Cornell University, but they do make a difference: "Eating 200 fewer calories a day can mean 20 pounds of weight lost in a year."

2. Mix It Up

It's easy to say "Eat more vegetables," but what about people who don't like spinach and broccoli? With a little attention to food prep, even vegephobes should be able to find greens (and oranges and reds) that are appealing.

"People, when they cook, focus on the recipe for meat," says Margo Wootan, the director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. "Then they serve plain steamed broccoli on the side. And that's boring. You need to put the same care into vegetables." Wootan suggests dipping Brussels sprouts in Dijon mustard or sautéing spinach, collards, or Swiss chard with garlic―or bacon.

Think about using leftover or fresh vegetables in risottos, soups, casseroles, and stews and putting leftovers in breakfast frittatas or pureeing them with olive oil to make a spread or a dip for a sandwich or an appetizer, suggests Laura Pensiero, who co-wrote The Strang Cancer Prevention Cookbook.

Another benefit of piling on the vegetables is that you can pump up the volume of a meal, even as you trim calories. By adding water-rich vegetables and fruits and substituting leaner cuts of meat in a recipe, you can create lower-calorie, healthier meals--and trick yourself into thinking you're eating as much as you always have.

3. Eat Less Meat

The mainstays of a healthy diet should be grains, nuts, and seeds, as well as non-starchy vegetables and fruits, rather than meat. Whole grains (oatmeal, brown rice, whole-wheat bread) provide fiber, which aids the digestive system and makes you feel fuller, and B vitamins, which can boost energy and aid metabolism. Nuts and seeds contain nutrients, such as vitamin E in almonds and sunflower seeds, that are otherwise hard to come by. Legumes―including beans, soybeans, peanuts, and lentils―provide fiber, too, along with protein, iron, folate, and other nutrients. Replacing meat with legumes as a protein source is a good strategy for reducing saturated-fat intake.

It's easier than you think to work these foods into your day. Open up a can of kidney beans or chickpeas and add them to soup, chili, or pasta. Or try a bowl of fortified breakfast cereal, 1 1/2 ounces of shelled sunflower seeds on a salad, or two ounces of almonds. You'll be one of the less than 3 percent of Americans who get the recommended daily dose of vitamin E.

4. Eat Less Meat

When it comes to fats, there's perhaps no other area of nutrition in which researchers have learned so much and confused so many consumers in the process. What you need to know is this: Fat has more calories per gram than carbohydrates or protein, so if you're trying to maintain or lose weight, limit the amount of fat you eat.

That said, not all fats affect the body equally. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are the "good" fats; they're found in nut and vegetable oils and oily fish, such as salmon, trout, and herring. They don't raise blood cholesterol levels and may even reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems. According to the American Heart Association, eating seafood with omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and sardines, twice a week may reduce the risk of certain forms of heart disease.

Saturated and trans fats, also known as the "bad" fats, are found in dairy and beef products and palm and coconut oils. The more of them you eat, the higher your risk of cardiovascular disease. Trans fats are also found in French fries and many commercially baked products, such as cookies and crackers, but are becoming less common.

5. Watch Those Portions...

Even as you try to eat foods that are loaded with nutrients, pay attention to the overall amount you consume. Brian Wansink, a professor of marketing and nutritional science at Cornell University, explains that people have three measures of satiety: starving, could eat more, and full.

"Most of the time, we're in the middle," he says. "We're neither hungry nor full, but if something is put in front of us, we'll eat it." He suggests announcing out loud, "I'm not really hungry, but I'm going to eat this anyway." This could be enough to deter you, or to inspire you to eat less.

Restaurants bring challenges, because portions are huge and tend to be high in fat and sodium. "Eating out has become a big part of our diet, about a third of our calories," says Wootan. "When eating out, we should apply the same strategies we do at home―not on your birthday, but on a Tuesday night when there's no time to cook."

One strategy: Share an entrée. You'll eat a healthier portion size and also save money.

6. Eat, Don't Drink, Your Calories

Beverages don't fill you up in the same way that foods do: Studies have shown that people eat the same amount whether or not they wash down their food with a 150-calorie drink. And most beverages don't contribute many nutrients.

In fact, all you really need is water, says Barry Popkin, head of the division of nutrition epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill. "In a historical context," says Popkin, aside from breast milk, "we drank only water in the first 190,000 years of our existence.

7. Cut-Out Packaged Foods and Read Labels

Be aware that three-quarters of the sodium and most of the trans fats and added sugar Americans ingest come from packaged foods.

The trick is to turn a blind eye to all the enticing claims on the fronts of packages―low-fat, low-net-carbs, zero trans fats!―as some are empty, some are unregulated, and some are misleading. Instead, cast a critical eye over the nutrition-facts box. Look first at calories, saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium.

Saturated fat and sodium are presented in grams and milligrams, respectively, and as a percentage of the recommended limit of what we should eat in a day; calories and trans fats are listed simply as amounts. If the numbers seem high, check out a few competing products to see if you can do better.

Note that you may need to multiply if there's more than one serving in a package and you realistically expect to eat two or three servings. Also read the figures for fiber, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and E. These are the nutrients you need to be eating more of every day.

10 Steps on Improving Your Metabolism

Get 10 tips on how you can increase your metabolism, naturally. You'll be surprised at how little things can affect your metabolism in a big way.

Are you sluggish and low on energy?

Do you feel like you work and work toward your weight loss goal and never seem to make any dramatic improvement?

You could be suffering from a slow metabolism. Even though you may have a slow metabolism, it does not have to destroy your weight loss efforts. You can dramatically improve your metabolism, and boost your energy levels without taking supplements.

Your metabolism simply refers to the conversion of food to usable energy by the body. It is the biological process, by which energy is extracted from food, and the net result is how fast or slowly the body burns those calories.

A few steps you can take to improve your metabolism naturally are:

Drink Water – Water is great to drink and you should be drinking a minimum of 8 to 10, glasses daily, of course, more is better. It will help increase your metabolism and flush out sodium, toxins, and fat. Drinking water before meals will fill your stomach so you feel full and prevent overeating. Avoid excess colas, coffee, teas, and sugary juices. Caffeine will dehydrate you, and the sugar will do more damage than good in the long-run.

Eat Every Three Hours – Eat a small balanced meal every three hours, including snacks. Meals and snacks should be balanced, meaning they should contain a complete protein, carbohydrates, as well as natural fat. Failure to eat consistently can lead to a slower metabolism and fat storage. Also, skipping meals slows down your metabolism. To ignite fat loss you need to be consuming the right foods in a balanced manner throughout the day.

Don't Skip Breakfast – Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gets your metabolism running in high gear. You wouldn't drive your car to work on an empty tank, and you shouldn't start your day without adequate nourishment. Your first meal sets your metabolism for the day and keeps it going, as long as you eat every three hours. If you get up early and eat a late breakfast, you miss out on several hours of burning calories.

Don't Fear Fat – Fat has developed a bad reputation. Many people think fat makes you fat. This is false. The type of fat and how much fat you eat impacts your body fat composition. Fat is needed by the body. Those who follow a very low-fat diet have a harder time ridding their body of fat. Choose natural healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, various nuts, flax, and natural peanut butter to receive your necessary fats.

Omit Trans Fat – Trans fat is the bad fat, the cause of weight gain, low energy, depression, cancer, and heart disease. You will never get the body you desire by eating "healthy" fast food, frozen dinners, and other processed choices. If it's man-made, it's not the best choice, and will halt fat loss endeavors. Eat the foods Mother Nature has provided to meet your fat loss goals.

Be Active Daily – Stay active at least six days a week. Take the stairs when possible or park further out to get that little bit of extra movement to keep the heart and lungs working optimally. The more movement you get daily, the better you will feel overall.

Do Cardiovascular Exercise – Cardio exercise is necessary for heart and lung health. It also burns calories. Doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach can tap into fat stores, and keep your body burning calories at a high rate for about an hour after cardio is finished. If you fail to eat adequately daily, first morning cardio on an empty stomach can work against you. Doing morning cardio on very low calorie diet can burn muscle. Another good time to incorporate cardio is in the evening after your last meal. This allows you to burn calories so you are not sleeping on them. You do not have to implement a morning and evening session, choose one or the other or cycle between the two to prevent staleness and boredom.

HIIT It – Blend some High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) into your cardiovascular program from time to time to give your body and metabolism a good shock. The body is programmed for adaptation. Therefore, doing the same cardio format day in and day out can become stale really fast. Take one or two days a week and implement some HIIT to give the body an added shock.

HIIT is basically alternating low intensity and moderate to high intensity cardio training.  For example, a 20 minute HIIT session would look similar to this:

Minute 1 and 2 – Low Intensity (Walking) Minute 3 and 4 – High Intensity (Light jogging or running) Minute 5 and 6 – Low Intensity Minute 7 and 8 – High Intensity and so on…

Weight Train – Resistance training builds muscle, which is metabolically active tissue. The more muscle you acquire, the faster your metabolism will be.  Adding more lean muscle tissue to your body will put curves in the right places and allow you to eat more calories a day.

Listen to Your Body – Killing yourself with workouts is just as dangerous as not working out at all. Listen to your body and get proper rest. Don't train if you are ill, still sore from the previous workout, or just simply too tired. Training in such a state can cause more problems than it solves.

If any of the above fails to prove results in 4 to 6 weeks, there could be an underlying problem, such as a food allergy, sluggish thyroid, hormonal imbalance, toxins, parasites, etc. If so, I recommend searching for a natural healer in your area to determine the cause. and work from there. For the most part, proper diet, detoxifying, and herbs can correct any ailments.

5 Myths about the Fitness Exercises

1. Sport is for professionals. This idea applies only in the case of performance sports. The native qualities required for professional sportsmen (speed, skills, specific height, etc.) can only be developed, they can't be formed by training. As long as the aim of a regular person is not performance, almost all sports can be practiced for keeping the body in a good shape. It's all about dosing the training you chose, so that the benefits are bigger than wear and tear. Even the sports considered tough can be practiced in a 'soft' way (tae-bo, mini-triathlon, jogging, etc.).

 2. Training is tiring. This idea is true as long as it refers to consuming all your energy (muscular and hepatic glycogen), but it doesn't mean that training gets you into that state of exhaustion which would slow down the process of recovery of the body. Even in performance sports, the purpose is to have rather effective than exhausting training, so that the body can get the stimulation necessary to qualitative progress from one training to the next.

Even more than in other sports, in fitness the sportsman is spared overexerting. However, the training must not become ineffective. People can come to the gym tired after a work day and leave relaxed (physically and psychologically) and not more tired. This is extremely useful for people with sedentary jobs, but also for those who make physical effort at work. They could use the training by choosing a type of effort meant to compensate the one involved in their job.

3. Training takes too long. Again, this idea is true if applied to performance, which can only be obtained by working a lot. But also in this case short and very intense training or training for relaxation and recovery are often performed. In fitness, you can get to 20-minute training, working only super-series of fast exercises, which could involve, directly or indirectly, all the muscles. Anyway, regular training shouldn't take longer than an hour and a half. Otherwise, the body will get into the catabolic faze, when the cortisone secretions 'cannibalize' the muscles.

4. Any type of exercise is good for solving your problems. What's true in this refers to some particular cases like excess of adipose tissue. This tissue can be 'melted' by any kind of aerobic exercise (running, cycling, swimming) if this is continued long enough. Even in these cases it was clear that some exercises are more effective than others. There are situations when only a combination of exercises with a certain amount of each, can provide you with the results you expect. More than that, repeating the same exercise all the time can have as a consequence not only losing balance in the antagonist muscles and in the joints involved in training, but also stopping progress or even regressing.

5. You're older? No more exercises! This is true only if we refer to extremely demanding efforts (really heavy weights, fast running, jumping, etc.). There are lots of exercises adapted to different ages. Their purpose is to keep and improve health and also to improve physical shape. The development of movement parameters for older people refers especially to muscular and cardio-vascular resistance as well as mobility of the joints. Because the final purpose of training is not preparing for a competition, the exercises can be organized gradually according to their difficulty, eliminating the risk of accidents. Because it's based on perseverance, fitness can be adapted without problems for older people and even for people suffering from different affections specific to old age.

Gavin Aquilina’s Tabata Training 101

In this article, Gavin Aquilina says we need to ask “why?” more often, in order to be better fitness professionals.

Tabata training doesn’t work!? How can somebody say that?

Tabata training would be one of the most misunderstood and misused terms in cross training, fitness and fat loss.

Quite often a high intensity circuit using a 20-second work effort followed by a 10 second recovery, repeated 8 times, is called a Tabata circuit. It might use for example, burpees, push ups or mountain climbers as a Tabata exercise and sometimes a combination. After a period of recovery the circuit is repeated 3 or 4 times over a 40 minute time period. This is not true Tabata training.

True Tabata training, is a warm up, followed by 20 seconds of work at 170% of your VO2 Max with a 10 second recovery (VO2 Max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise). This is repeated 8 times for a 4-minute workout.

This true Tabata protocol is very effective at increasing VO2 Max and explosive anaerobic power over a 6 week period. And in its true form, it is only a 4 minute workout. Therefore Tabata may spike your metabolism BUT it is not of great enough duration/volume to promote significant calorie burning and in turn fat loss.

The timing protocol of 20 seconds work followed by 10 seconds recovery, reflects the Tabata methodology. Determining 170% of VO2 Max for many of the selected exercises cannot be done. For example in a park or gym floor, it is very hard for me to measure and therefore do, 170% of my VO2 Max on burpees.

In actual fact if you complete the true Tabata protocol (20sec + 10 sec x 8 repeats) on an exercise bike or cycle ergometer and then give yourself a 4 to 5 min low intensity active recovery, it is impossible to complete another sequence of the Tabata protocol for 8 repeats. If your lucky you will possibly achieve 6 repeats or 3 minutes. Give yourself another 4 to 5 mins recovery and once again the numbers will drop down to around 4 repeats or 2 minutes.

It is important we ask questions such as, how can we:
Apply Tabata for fat loss?
Apply Tabata for fitness?
Complete in field VO2 Max tests and calculate Tabata speeds/distances?
Is Tabata better than long duration for increasing VO2 Max?

It is so important as an industry, that we ask more WHY’S and don’t just blindly follow a trend. Understanding what and why we are doing something is so very important.

Ask More WHY’S!

Used Fitness Equipment: To Get Fit

Today, more and more people are getting more and more concerned about how their body looks. You can never deny the fact that having a great looking and muscular body is very attractive. With those well-defined muscles, you can be sure that you will have more FitnHealthy appeal than your average person with that extra "love handles" or "beer belly".
You also need to consider the health reasons behind the great looking and muscular body. Having a great looking and muscular body means that you will also have a healthy heart. First of all, you need to consider that muscles burn fat inside your body. By doing this, you will be able to prevent heart related diseases where fat clogs up your arteries and make you suffer from heart attacks and strokes.

You have to realize the fact that there is a significant increase of heart related diseases and diabetes cases in the World. Thanks to fast food and automation, people are getting more obese each day .

Because of this, more and more are turning their TV off, and are now starting to exercise in the gym. Exercising is the best and the normal way to develop your muscles and keep your heart healthy. It is very important to remember that by exercising, you will be able to have that muscular body you have always wanted. However, what if you don’t even have time to go to the gym and you prefer staying at home?

You can consider answering this question by purchasing your own home fitness equipment. However, you also need to realize that home fitness machines are quite expensive. If you are a type of person who is in a low income level and you still want to exercise, you can still do so by jogging around your local park. However, the main disadvantage of this is your local weather. If it rains or snows, you can never go out and do your daily run.

So, the best way to exercise without going to the gym is by purchasing used fitness equipment. These are second hand fitness equipment that the previous owner doesn't want anymore because of various reasons. Some sells their fitness equipment because they plan on replacing their fitness equipment with newer models, while other says that they sell their fitness equipment because no one actually uses it.

However, before you purchase used fitness equipment, you have to consider the fact that this equipment are already used and may have maintenance problems. If it is possible, you have to try it out first for a few times. By doing this, you will determine if the used fitness equipment being offered is still in good working condition. Never buy used fitness equipment that emits strange and unnecessary noise when being operated.

If it is possible, you can bring your personal trainer along when shopping for used fitness equipment. They will be able to determine if the used fitness equipment being offered is in top working condition or not. They will also be able to recommend some fitness equipment's that you need.

These are some of the things you should remember when purchasing used fitness equipment.

Health And Nutrition - Fitting Fitness Into Your Busy Day

When it comes to health and fitness training time is always an issue. Some of us are busy, some of us are very busy, and some of us are so busy we don't even know which way is up. Sound familiar?
If you are the kind of person who is on the go the minute the alarm rings in the morning to the minute your head hits the pillow at night this article is for you. If you have kids who eat up all your time and you dream of a little time to yourself, this article is for you. If you want desperately to get fit but other commitments are making it next to impossible this article is for you.
Here's the good news, getting fit doesn't take that much time. You need to address two areas in your life; exercise and diet. In fact, if you are stuck for time to workout, the diet portion is going to have more of a drastic effect on your fitness.
Think about it, if you don't have time to burn the calories then you need to cut them out !

Wait a minute! You are probably thinking to yourself that food is one of the only sources of pleasure in your busy day. I agree with you, it should be. Eating well better darn well also be delicious. If it isn't then you are doomed to fail your diet. So understand what I am saying, you will eat well but you must also enjoy your food. I am not talking about a radical starvation diet or diet extremes where you avoid carbs or fats at all costs. Your diet should be well-balanced.
Here are a few golden rules for your Nutrition and staying on track..
1. Drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day
2. Avoid processed foods
3. Avoid foods with refined sugar

Here's a last tip, if you are the type who eats a lot of fast food because you are so busy, just make better choices. Order water instead of pop with your meal. Have a salad instead of fries with your burger or sandwich. Have honey instead of sugar in your coffee. All these small choices made day after day will add up in the long run.
Think about it, maybe you have been putting on 5 to 10 pounds a year for a few years. Not a lot of weight over the course of a year. This slow addition of fat has been because of all these small choices. So you don't have to make big changes to reverse this weight gain.
As for a fitness routine do one set of the following as you roll out of bed in the morning and just before you go to bed at night:
1. Push ups
2. Lunges (Take a long stride of a stance and do 1 set each for side)
3. Crunches (Remember to hold your hands by your ears, not inter-laced behind your head ‚ don't pull on your neck while you do these)
4. IF YOU ARE FEELING AMBITIOUS ‚Chin ups ( you can get a chin up bar that installs in a door frame for around $20 from most sports stores)

If you follow a simple fitness routine like the one outlined above you will definitely get strong. This will result in a sleek and shapely physique. As you lose weight and shed fat you will reveal this new toned body.
Fitness workout programs don't have to be a one or two hour ordeal. It can be and short and sweet if that is all you have time to do. What is important is that you do something to keep your body strong and performing well. One day at some point in the future you just may have more free time to join a gym or a running club or whatever you like to do. When that day comes you will be ready for it because this little fitness exercise plan and simple diet has kept you fit.
Don't put it off. It doesn't take much effort. Make a change in your life starting today.

Kettle Bell Seated Shoulder Press

Clean a kettlebell to your shoulder. Clean the kettlebell to your shoulder by extending through the legs and hips as you pull the kettlebell towards your shoulder. Rotate your wrist as you do so, so that the palm faces inward. This will be your starting position. Look at the kettlebell and press it up and out until it is locked out overhead. Lower the kettlebell back to your shoulder under control and repeat. Make sure to contract your lat, butt, and stomach forcefully for added stability and strength.

The Complexity of Buying Running Shoes

Before the big names in running shoes created the modern approach in design and functionality, anyone who likes to buy a pair of athletic or running shoes would simply buy a generic brand and style common to everyone.

All they actually have to determine is their shoe size, preference in color and brand. Other than that, it was simple and easy to buy without much trouble.

However, with concerns regarding injuries and constant research and development, many manufacturers like Nike and Asics have created modern running shoes to cater to every possible need of a runner or athlete.

We all know how an athlete's career can be put on hold if he or she suffers a major injury on or off the field. The importance of having the right gear and keeping performance at its best are given more value in designing the perfect pair of shoes for every type of runner or athlete.

This may be great for many runners out there, but the whole process of buying, trying out different type of shoes and knowing your running profile and style becomes more complex than simply buying off the rack. Here are some tips on how you can easily determine which pair of running shoes to buy.

Answer the Where and How?

There are different types of shoes for various runners. Identify the common place where you run and how you run. Different kinds of shoes are used when running on pavement, treadmill, or challenging trails. You would also have to know if you need more cushion or more lightweight design to cater your running profile.

Many shoe stores and websites nowadays promote proper buying of running shoes. You can learn from there if you are a regular pronator or moderate to heavy pronator. Pronation is defined by how much your foot rotates when you run.

The more your foot rotates, the heavier pronator you are, and there's a specific type of running shoes ideal for a type of runner. The idea behind this is to reduce injuries and muscle strain to be able to provide the best running experience and performance to any runner.

A heavy pronator would need more cushioning to prevent excessive rotation or movement while regular pronators can benefit well from lightweight designs with less cushioning. You can check with a local salesperson for assistance when you're about to buy a pair of running shoes.

Be patient. For a first-time buyer, it would take some time for the salesperson to figure out your foot type and running profile.

Some stores even have a designated area where you will be tested on how you run and what your running style is.

Going through this process may be a bit of a trouble for some, but it will be beneficial in the long run. You will be preventing future injuries because of an inappropriate pair of shoes, and you will have less to worry about injuries, blisters, and muscle strain.

The next time you'll buy your next pair of shoes, you won't have to go through the process again and just take note of your running profile and style for future reference.

Knowing how expensive running shoes are these days, you need to put more effort in your choices. It might be complex now but finding out what's best for you will be more value spent for every dollar.

7 BENEFITS OF HEAVY RESISTANCE TRAINING

For years only a finite number of dedicated fitness enthusiasts practiced a sure-fire method of achieving results from exercise: weightlifting with the heaviest loads possible.

Most common gym routines are derived from the bodybuilding world and focus on moderate-to-high repetition ranges, usually eight to 15 reps, to increase the size of a muscle.
Serious strength-training enthusiasts know that lifting heavy for five repetitions or less, while extremely challenging, is the quickest way to increase muscle strength.

There is a distinctive difference between training for muscle size—technically called hypertrophy—and training for strength and increasing a muscle’s ability to generate force. While lifting heavy can improve the force output of a muscle without significantly increasing its size, training for size can increase muscle volume without necessarily improving strength.

Lifting with high repetitions can increase the sarcoplasmic hypertrophy of a muscle by increasing the amount of fluid in the sarcoplasm of muscle cells. However, using a heavy weight for fewer repetitions results in myofibrillar hypertrophy by increasing the thickness of individual muscle fibers.

Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy increases the size of a muscle, while myofibrillar hypertrophy results in thicker muscle fibers capable of generating higher levels of force.

If you are looking for a way to supercharge your clients’ workouts or help move past them past a plateau, consider using a weight heavy enough to limit them to five repetitions or less.* Here are seven benefits of how using heavy resistance can maximize the results from your fitness program.

Training for muscle strength is different than training for muscle size. A six- to 10-week strength-focused mesocycle of heavy resistance and low reps followed by a six- to 10-week hypertrophy (bodybuilder) mesocycle of moderate weight for higher rep ranges can produce significant gains in both size and strength.

Using heavy weights increases intramuscular coordination, the number of type II motor units and the amount of muscle fibers engaged within a specific muscle. Have you ever felt your muscles shaking while lifting heavy weights? This is because you are recruiting and activating the larger type II muscle fibers, which are only stimulated to work when a muscle is challenged with heavy resistance or working to fatigue.

Using maximal loads for compound (multi-joint) movements like the deadlift, squat-to-shoulder press, bent-over row or chest press can improve intermuscular coordination, which is the ability of many muscles to work together to generate and control high levels of force through multiple joints.

Lifting heavy weights elevates levels of anabolic hormones—specifically testosterone, growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1)—which are used to repair muscle fibers damaged during exercise. This helps the muscle fibers to become thicker and capable of generating higher levels of force.
Lifting heavy weights increases production of the hormone IGF-1. This hormone is related to the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is a neurotransmitter responsible for stimulating the growth of new neural pathways in the brain along with enhancing communication between existing pathways. In short, lifting heavy could make you smarter by enhancing cognitive function.

Training with heavy weights helps you to improve your self-confidence. Knowing that you can lift heavy stuff gives you the confidence that you can handle common challenges, such as a putting a bag in the overhead bin on an airplane or carrying a heavy piece of furniture while reorganizing a room or helping a friend move.

Strength training with heavy weights improves muscle definition. Muscle definition occurs as the result of muscles remaining in a state of semi-contraction and heavy strength training recruits the larger type II muscle fibers responsible for a muscle’s appearance.

10 Things You Should Know About Stretching

10 Things You Should Know About Stretching

Before fitness training, one must give importance to doing warm-up or stretching exercises to prevent accidents or to enhance the output during the training.
There are also a number of precautionary measures and tips to serve as guidelines when doing fitness exercises.

Here are some of them.

1.  To increase your flexibility and to avoid injuries, stretch before and after workout.  Almost everyone knows that stretching before workout prevents injuries during the exercises, but only few people know that stretching after workout, when muscles are still warm, can increase flexibility.

2.  Hold your stretching position for more than 60 seconds to increase flexibility.  While holding your position for 20 seconds is enough for warm ups, holding each position for at least 60 seconds will develop the body's flexibility.

3.  Do not go into a stretching position then immediately return to the relaxed position, and do it repeatedly.  This is more appropriately termed as bouncing while in a position.  When stretching, hold that position for several seconds, and then slowly relax.

4.  Work slowly in increments instead of immediately proceeding to doing the hardest exercise or position.

5.  Make sure that you have stretched or warmed up all muscle groups.  For some people, even if they have strong bodies, they tend to neglect the neck when working out of stretching.  Stretching the neck muscles can be as simple as placing the palm of one's hand against the front of the head and pushing it.  Then, do the same to the sides and the back of the head.

6.  Stretch regularly to continually increase your range of movements and your level of flexibility and strength.

7.  Workout considering only your capabilities and not of others.  Do not force yourself to do exercises that you are not yet capable of just because there are people who can do it.  Increase your limits slowly.  Listen to your body. There are days when your body may be too tired that you may have to consider reducing your range of motion.

8.  Learn to rest. Rest in between sets and stations to make sure that the body has enough time to recover its energy.  Also, it is advisable that you don't work the same muscle groups consecutively for two days. The muscles grow during the period when you rest and not when you are working out.

9.  Do aerobic exercises to strengthen your heart.  Aerobic exercises are those physical activities that much oxygen for fuel. This includes cardiovascular exercises such as skipping rope, running or swimming.

10.  Music may help you when you want to train for longer periods or to increase your intensity.  You can use mp3 players,  lightweight ipod etc for this.  Just make sure that you brought your headset with you so you wouldn't disturb people who don't prefer music while exercising.

Apart from preventing injuries and increasing one's limit, it is also said that stretching is good for a tired body and also for a stressed mind and spirit.

You may do this exercise repeatedly this way.  Bouncing or forcing yourself into a position during stretching can strain or damage some joints or muscles.
